The drawing shows a headshot of a rhinoceros in a three-quarter-view. It has a hazy, empty look in its eyes and is looking out of a dark, rhombus shape which is shaded in, while the surroundings are left blank.
It is wearing a tie and smoking a cigarette, which fills the background to the left of its head with light smoke. The rhinoceros is shaded by stippling; both the dark shadows and the highlights are presented in a pointillistic style, defining shapes using only the density of inked dots.
The dark, almost black shade of the background within the diamond shape, in contrast to the paper-white highlight, elevates the rhinoceros from the page.
