The painting shows a headshot of a blue rhinoceros in a three-quarter-view. He has a hazy, empty look in his eyes and is placed in front of a black background. ​​​​​​​He is smoking a cigarette, which fills the background to the left of his head with light smoke. The rhinoceros is also wearing a tie, which, together with the cigarette, stands in a complementary contrast to the vibrant blue hide and horns through their bright magenta shade. ​​​​​​​The rhinoceros is shaded in a rough, blotchy style with stark black shadows and bright, selective highlights which elevate it from the black of the background.
