Pencils, watercolour and coffee on paper, 48x36cm, January 2019
The drawing is of a marble bust of a young man from the hellenistic period of antiquity in front of a blue and beige background. The head is fragmented, a clear cut from the head’s left cheek to its temple removed the top part of his skull with its hair, forehead and eyes. The bust is facing the viewer frontally and placed in the very centre of the drawing.
The background is painted with a light blue watercolour wash throughout the lower and middle parts of the drawing, the beige colour is painted with coffee and covers the top part of the image. The two colours are separated by a diagonal, slightly below the bust’s fragmentation, following its direction and placing additional focus on it.
The bust itself is softly shaped with graphite pencils in a realistic style.
The grey colour of the bust stands out against the background through it being entirely coloured in with light, soft colours, removing pure white from every part of the page except for the bust. The bust is elevated from the page through the black and white shading, which makes it the only part of the drawing with contrast through the light white and dark shadows.
