Watercolour, ink and coloured pencil on paper, 31x24cm, December 2017
The painting depicts a skull in a three-quarter view slightly on right of the centre. A hydrangea flower sits on top of the skull, leaning against an old, weathered root. The root is propped up against the back of the skull looking out on its left side. Two chili peppers are set in front of where the root, skull and flower touch.
The background has a subtle, pinkish grey watercolour wash, which together with the warm palette of the root, the flower and the peppers creates a stark contrast to the cold whitish colour of the skull.
The subjects are lit by a natural light source from the right-hand side of the frame, causing soft contact shadows around the still life on the surface and darker tones in the cavities of where they interact.
