Watercolour and pencil on paper, 21x30cm, March 2019
The image shows two sketchbook pages with self-portraits on a bed. The page on the left shows a young woman sitting cross-legged on a bed in the centre of the frame with her hands in front of her. She is facing the viewer towards the foot end of the bed; on the wall behind her there is a large drawing. To the left of her bed there is a wooden chair with a water bottle on it. On the right behind her sits a large teddy bear which is leaning into the corner of the room. The wall on her right is a wooden brown colour and is covered with smaller pictures.
The sketchbook page on the right seems to visualise the girl’s point of view. There is a door on the left which has pieces of paper stuck onto it. A small strip of wooden floor is visible at the bottom of the frame. The rest of the image shows a dull, grey wall which is bare for the most part, with the exception of a mirror and a purse to its right. In the mirror you can see a rough sketch of the same scene shown on the left page.
Both sketches are drawn with pencil and coloured with aquarelle paint. The image on the left has mostly soft shades of blue, which contrasts with the warm tones of the chair with the water bottle, the bed frame, red mug and wall, pulling in the focus to the middle of the image where the figure is placed. The second page has the mirror’s surroundings painted with muddy, dark colours. Only the mirror’s reflection is painted in light pastel tones, setting it apart from the surrounding room.
