Watercolour, pencil and ink on paper, 15x21cm, April 2019

The sketchbook page shows fragmented marble statues which are held up by metal rods. They are sketched with pencil, and painted with soft pastel watercolours. The stone is painted in a soft pink, shaded with a more saturated colour mix of the pink and the lighter surface areas painted with a pastel orange. The metal rods are a saturated yellow whereas the background is painted in a soft green, slightly blotchy colour wash.
This creates a colourway from green to yellow, moving on to orange which accentuates the pink, while also creating a complementary contrast between the subject of the sketch and its background.
