Acrylic on canvas, 80x60cm, November 2019
The painting depicts a double portrait of a father with his young son in his arms.
The two people are centrally placed in the image with the man standing to the left, holding his child to his chest, looking at him from slightly above with his face visible in a profile view. He has curly brown hair, a prominent nose and a large chevron moustache. His chest and shoulders aren’t fully visible but implied with the whitish yellow collar of his shirt with a dark t-shirt underneath, as well as brown suspenders which fade out without showing more of themselves than necessary.
The child is looking straight at the viewer, his right arm loosely hanging by his side and his left leaning against his father’s shoulder, touching his own ear with his hand. The arm which he is sitting on is not visible in the painting. He is wearing light blue dungarees, visible to his waist which aligns to where his father’s chest fades. His shirt is the same light yellow colour as his dad’s.
The background is painted in smoothly spread acrylic paint, the figures with an impasto style layering of colour. The blue colour of the background and the pair’s blue clothing is loosened up by the bright red, orange and yellow paint marks across the painting. The light clothing with mostly warm yellow tones and the warm skin tones create a cold-warm contrast with the predominantly cold background colour.
