This is the portrait of one of my school friends. As a group, we were all applying for university courses that required us to submit portfolios – so we decided to work on them together. The painting is one in a series of three, painted from a photograph I took. The paintings are at varying stages of abstraction. It was the first time I tried painting a person using this technique of scraping acrylic or oil paint onto the canvas with a palette knife.
