I struggle a lot with the background and haven’t yet finished this piece. My inspiration for it is the artist Peter Deligdisch, whose approach to drawing is one of letting things be created in the moment. I find it easier to draw or paint when I have an idea of what the finished work should look like, which is in direct contrast to Peter’s approach. The reason I chose to draw Robin in that style is that I wanted to draw a portrait of the subject that would show him as accurately as possible within the context of the drawing, using ink and a confusing, abstract background to represent his personality.
